The Evil Eye Reborn: Talismans for the Digital Era
This body of work narrates the symbolic rebirth of the “Evil Eye” within the context of the digital age.
As electronic devices become as pervasive as the air we breathe, and digital technologies continue to redefine human experience, a critical question arises: In an era increasingly shaped by algorithms, do we require new forms of talismanic protection?
Guided by this inquiry, I engaged in an experimental dialogue with 3D printing technology. By intentionally retaining artifacts resulting from procedural errors and machine imperfections, I integrated technological “flaws” into the visual language of the works. This collab- orative process between human and machine explores profound questions: Can computational systems develop traces of autonomous thought? Is there affective potential within technology? Could machinery exhibit a form of embodied spirituality?
In response to the expanding influence of artificial intelligence, I adopt a position of deliberate neutrality—neither endorsing nor opposing its advancement. Instead, I employ the motif of the eye within a series of brooches, conceived as symbolic amulets. These pieces serve as metaphysical buffers, intended to safeguard human essence against potential alienation induced by technological extremism.
Within my practice, jewelry functions as a transtemporal medium—a conduit connecting versions of the self across time. Symbolic art, in this framework, becomes a linguistic instrument for inner cultivation. This theoretical underpinning informs my use of the eye, an ancient symbol imbued with layered cultural meanings.
There exists an interstitial domain between the tangible and the imperceptible. While the eye apprehends the visible, it remains blind to phenomena such as emotion, consciousness, and dark matter. Yet these invisible forces participate in deep reciprocal exchanges that structure reality. Through the symbolic lens of the eye, I seek to materialize these intangible relations.
The series comprises 30 works that collectively articulate a philosophical cycle. The first 22 pieces trace the eye’s gradual awakening, while the final eight transition toward abstraction and void. The thirtieth work coincides with the zeroth—collapsing endpoint into origin. This circular structure serves as a metaphysical inquiry into themes of life and death, genesis and closure, and the eternal recursion of where we come from and where we are going.
